Aus dem Vorwort / Preface: |
Iwan Müller (often written in English as Ivan Mueller), born in Tallinn, Estonia in 1786, was more than just one of the greatest clarinet virtuosi of his time. In fact, his efforts in the technical improvement of the instrument would influence further developments in clarinet making in the 19th century. Müller's life lead him clear across Europe, whether promoting his inventions, accepting new engagements, or on concert tours as a celebrated soloist. His own many virtuosic compositions for clarinet were often performed. Müller died in Bückeburg (Lower Saxony) in 1854. The chronicle of the Mecklenburg-Schwerin Court Concerts, the so-called "Ludwigslust Diary," refers to Müller's concerts in September 1824, one of which was at Bad Doberan on the Baltic coast. Here the Archduke Friedrich Franz I (1756-1837), bent on improving his health, had his summer residence. So it was that the first coastal bathing spot in Germany was born which would later develop into a urbane spa town and one of the elite high society watering holes in Europe. The Duo Concertant for clarinet, horn and piano that Müller played there together with Schwerin Court virtuoso hornist Carl Friedrich Bode was published in 1827 by Ricordi. Subtitled "Souvenir de Dobberan" and dedicated to Archduke Friedrich Franz I, it is this edition that serves as the basis of the present publication. The three movement composition (Allegro maestoso, Andante, Allegro brillante) presents a virtuosic feeling, technically challenging dialogue between the two solo instruments. The piano contribution is limited to that of straightforward accompaniment. The consistently high tessitura of the horn part (in F) ranges up to c''' (an ossia for which is also written), while the clarinet part goes up to a discretionary notated a''' and demands a highly developed technique. This new edition includes an optional basset horn part as a natural substitute for horn, and an additional part for clarinet in B-flat is likewise provided. Notenbeispiel: |
